A Banana for a Million? This is the Art that Changes the World

Contemporary art has always had a remarkable ability to push boundaries and redefine its very foundations. However, few works have sparked such heated debates and influenced global cultural consciousness as Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian – a banana stuck to the wall with duct tape. Sound banal? On the contrary, it is a work that has sparked an avalanche of controversy and has become a permanent part of 21st century art history.

An ordinary banana, an extraordinary reaction

When Cattelan presented his work for the first time at Art Basel in Miami Beach in December 2019, the world went wild. Thousands of people came to see the million-dollar banana, the media were filled with headlines and heated discussions continued on every continent. Critics were divided: some saw Comedian as a provocative reflection on the value of art, others as a joke that went too far. Regardless of opinion, however, the work triggered something that art often desires but rarely achieves: dialogue on a global scale.

Comedy or thoughtful message?

Cattelan does not shy away from controversy. His previous works, such as La Nona Ora depicting Pope John Paul II crushed by a meteorite, showed that the artist is not afraid of provocation. In the case of Comedian, he went one step further. In his own words: ‘It wasn’t a joke. It was an honest question about what we really value in the art world. At art fairs, everything happens fast and business comes first. I decided I could sell a banana the way others sell paintings – gaming the system, but on my own terms.’

The value of art in the hands of the public

Now, four years after its debut, Comedian has hit the world stage again. Sotheby’s, one of the most prestigious auction houses, has put the work up for auction with an estimated price of between $1 million and $1.5 million. The auction took place in New York, preceded by a world tour – from Paris to Hong Kong to Tokyo. The Comedian auction was one of the most anticipated events in the art world. In New York, the work appeared as part of The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction. The final price of $6.2 million became one of the highest achieved by conceptual works in recent years.

In the spirit of conceptual art

Comedian is part of a rich tradition of conceptual artworks that have changed the way we think about art. From Marcel Duchamp and his famous Fountain, to Robert Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning Drawing, to Banksy’s surprisingly ‘destroyed’ painting Love is in the Bin – these works have not only provoked, but redefined art from the inside out. In the case of Comedian, the simplicity – sticking a banana with tape – forces us to reflect on what really determines the value of a work of art.

A work that everyone knows

Since its first day, Comedian has become a global phenomenon, hitting the covers of newspapers and portals. One copy has found its place in the collection of New York’s Guggenheim, and the work is still being analysed, interpreted and, as it turns out, eaten. Yes, the banana was eaten at least twice during the original exhibition, which only fuelled its legend.

Is Comedian a joke, a provocation or a profound message? Probably all at once. One thing is certain: it is a work that captures the spirit of our times – a world of quick reactions, viral sensationalism and the constant questioning of what really matters. This year’s auction showed how much and how much we are prepared to pay for something that seems so simple.

An exclusive and unique apartment building located in the centre of Łódź has already undoubtedly become a symbol of the city. A New York ironclad in Lodz?

The modern shape of the building, which resembles an iron, is reminiscent of New York’s Flatrion building, which was constructed in the early 20th century as an office building. The original, unique shape and the iconic nature of the buildings in the context of the site are essentially their only common denominator. Other than that, they are two completely different projects. The New York building is more reminiscent of a townhouse, NEW IRON is a decidedly contemporary design that stands out from the revitalised townhouses of Łódź. In addition, NEW IRON was designed from the very beginning as a unique apartment building, to which the first tenants can already move in, while the adaptation of Flatrion into an exclusive apartment building has only just begun. New Iron is therefore the first residential building with such an unusual shape.

Apartment building recognised in Europe

This is the most visually spectacular development in the centre of Łódź, which impresses with its form, both residents and visitors, and has also been recognised internationally. The NEW IRON project, was among the best architectural projects from across Europe and was awarded the European Property Awards 2024-2025 in the Multifamily Architecture category. The distinction in one of the largest and most important plebiscites in the commercial and residential real estate industry, further emphasises the uniqueness and visual value of the apartment building. Responsible for the building’s design is the Lodz-based architect Marcin Tomaszewski of the REFORM Architekt studio, whose projects not only surprise with their form, architectural and visual concept, but are also awarded in international competitions – this is not his first award in the European Property Awards.

Undoubtedly a unique project!

NEW IRON is one of the most interesting blocks in Poland and the most interesting residential project in Łódź. A distinctive feature of the project is certainly the rounded corner of the building, designed as a glass block running from the second to the sixth storey. On the ground floor, the continuation of the glass tube is a circular column supporting the overhang. On the other hand, the last and highest storey of the building is glazed and forms a single mass with the glass corner. It is worth noting that the joining of the glass elements into one unit – without pillars – required special technology. The building also features large uluprof aluminium windows with a minimum height of 240 cm. – a top-quality product from a top manufacturer in Poland. Such large glazings guarantee ideal illumination of the interiors and are in line with the latest global trends.

– The façade finishing itself is also far from the standards commonly applied in the construction industry. The frames dividing the building’s façade into smaller spaces and the decorative elements in the form of vertical pilasters projecting in front of the building’s façade are finished with graphite-coloured stone, specifically quartz sinters. In the spaces between the windows, decorative elements made of metal were designed. In addition, the façade is decorated with vertical pilasters protruding in front of the building’s façade, in which led lights are hidden,’ says Piotr Leśniak, General Director of Bona Fide Development. Everything in general as well as in detail is coherent with each other and gives an exceptional quality.

Inspiring, exclusive interiors and amenities to a five-star standard!

This modern and exclusive apartment building, offers a total of 37 flats from 42 to 83 m² with large terraces, spacious duplexes from 75 to 125 m² and exclusive penthouses from 142 to 220 m² with a separate lift, which are located in a glass tower. The largest of these has a private exit to the terrace. It is worth mentioning that the height of the flats is 3 m² – which makes for impressive space. The non-standard layouts of the flats allow for various design possibilities – both outside and inside are exceptional! In addition, the apartment building offers ideal space for two commercial premises with areas ranging from 79 to 95 m².

The common areas of the building are also refined in every detail and meet the needs of the residents. On the ground floor, there is a prestigious lobby paved with black stone and elegant wood. Impressive is the impressive stone counter – a place for the concierge, who is a support for both individual residents and business representatives who have decided on a property in this exclusive location. The corridors are also stylish, kept in a black and white colour scheme that gives the interiors an elegant feel. An interesting and undoubtedly luxurious feature is the communal space on the roof of the apartment building, which reflects its elite character.

The building is monitored and each flat is equipped with a smart home system, air conditioning and underfloor heating in the bathrooms. An electric car charger and a functional bicycle room have been installed in the underground two-storey garage.

In this exclusive interview, Ueli Schnorf, co-owner of Wetag Consulting, shares insights into the agency’s journey, the unique appeal of Ticino, and the evolving trends in the luxury real estate market.

Luxury Lifestyle Awards: Wetag Consulting has a remarkable history spanning nearly five decades. Could you share the key moments or turning points that have defined Wetag’s evolution as a boutique real estate agency?

Ueli Schnorf: When we acquired Wetag in the mid-Nineties, it was a small, traditional real estate company with aging owners whose best days were behind them. We didn’t want to lose money, so we gave it a push. Shortly after, Sotheby’s, who were building a European luxury network, became aware of us and invited us to become their affiliate. This was in 2000. I was elected to their European Advisory Board and quickly became acquainted with European luxury realtors. In 2004, when Sotheby’s sold their network to a franchise company, none of the European affiliates wanted to follow this path. Together with two other advisors, I co-founded the European Real Estate Network (EREN) with this group, where I have served as a director ever since.

In 2005, we successfully negotiated with Christie’s to invite suitable EREN members to become new Christie’s European affiliates, as Wetag has been since that year. These negotiations firmly anchored us in the international luxury scene, and we subsequently shifted Wetag’s focus entirely to luxury real estate. Over the years, we were approached by many international luxury associations for membership, but we couldn’t be everywhere. Whenever an international celebrity was among our buyers or sellers, word spread, though, of course, we never disclosed anything. Being voted Christie’s worldwide ‘Affiliate of the Year’ a few years ago was certainly a career highlight.

LLA: Wetag specializes in the luxury real estate market in Ticino. In your view, what sets Ticino apart from other regions in Switzerland, both in terms of lifestyle and real estate offerings?

US: Ticino is one of the Swiss cantons offering the possibility for tax agreements, an attractive feature for many. Unlike the rest of Switzerland, Ticino enjoys a much warmer and sunnier subtropical Mediterranean climate, with Italian as its language, and a lifestyle and cuisine to match. Fashion capital Milan is less than an hour’s drive away. The architecture here reflects the Mediterranean style, with villas and palazzi, while the gardens are filled with palm trees, banana plants, and orange trees. The grey winter skies of Zurich feel a world away.

LLA: Wetag Consulting recently secured the Luxury Lifestyle Award for the Best Luxury Real Estate Brokerage in Switzerland for the third time. What do you believe has been the driving factor behind Wetag’s consistent success in receiving this prestigious recognition?

US: We focus exclusively on luxury properties, leaving everything else aside. With our services, we aim to be among the best in the world, a goal we pursue through our extensive network of connections. We attend numerous international conferences throughout the year, closely monitoring every development in the luxury sector, and we implement what suits us long before it becomes the standard in Europe or Switzerland.

But above all, my partners, our entire team, and I are truly passionate about what we do. Passionate – you know what I mean? We love what we do; it’s not just work, it’s our life, and we want to do it well. And we make sure to have fun along the way; we’re like a group of friends. This enthusiasm naturally extends to our clients, many of whom become friends as well.

LLA: How have you seen the luxury real estate market in Ticino evolve over the years? Are there any current trends in buyer preferences or property design that stand out to you?

US: The Ticino luxury market is fueled by the continuous international demand for high-end residential properties. Over the past 20 years, we have served clients from more than 70 countries, each with distinct preferences. However, general trends show a strong inclination toward turn-key properties, modern technology, and contemporary architecture. Most buyers are not interested in investing time in renovations or extensive conversions.

LLA: Wetag’s clients are described as discerning and sophisticated. What are the main qualities or services they value most when searching for luxury properties, and how does Wetag tailor its approach to meet these needs?

US: The most important thing is to first understand the diverse needs of our clients and help them see how their desires can align with local realities and regulations. This often involves addressing key issues like residence permits and taxes. We don’t make empty promises; instead, we ensure they understand the potential drawbacks of each situation. But we don’t just point out problems—we solve them. That’s exactly what I would expect as a client in a foreign country, as simple as that.

LLA: As an exclusive member representing Ticino within global luxury real estate networks, how does this affiliation benefit your clients? What advantage does this bring to those seeking properties in the region?

US: First of all, being affiliated with a well-known name signals that we maintain a certain high standard of service. These networks also help channel potential clients to us. However, the majority of our clients find us independently, simply because we have a reputation for fulfilling their needs exceptionally well. Additionally, we have many contacts who come to us when they want to buy or sell property abroad – whether in Australia, Argentina, or elsewhere. We can offer valuable assistance and connect them with the right people.

LLA: As an executive business owner who also calls Ticino home, how does living in the region influence the way you approach the real estate market? Does it give Wetag an edge in understanding what truly matters to buyers?

US: Yes, living in Ticino certainly helps when it comes to understanding the everyday aspects that matter to buyers – such as schools, sports, and shopping. However, I believe it’s even more important to travel extensively and study real estate offerings and practices in other countries. This hands-on experience allows us to truly understand what’s essential in the global luxury market and implement those insights for our clients.

LLA: Looking ahead, what are your goals for Wetag Consulting over the next few years? How do you envision the Ticino real estate market evolving, and how is Wetag preparing for that future?

US: Switzerland will likely continue to be an attractive place to live, though political decisions or global events could change that. We closely monitor these developments and ensure we stay competitive, never resting on our laurels. We regularly gather feedback from our clients and use an independent qualification system to keep improving – feel free to check our website for more details. Financially, we remain conservative; we have no debts, no loans, and no creditors. This independence allows us to act quickly and adapt to any market changes.

LLA: Throughout your career at Wetag, what has been one of your most memorable or rewarding experiences in helping a client find their dream property in Ticino?

US: Oh, there have been so many memorable moments. One that stands out is when I was called by an elderly couple looking to sell their unique villa and asked for advice on how to proceed. I could see that this lovely couple, who had traveled the world, would be unhappy anywhere else. Instead of encouraging them to sell, I suggested they transform their villa to better suit their needs as they aged. They looked at each other and agreed, saying, “We think Mr. Schnorf is a wise man, and we will follow his advice.” Years later, after her husband had passed, the widow called me for guidance on what to do next. This experience taught me an important lesson: it’s vital to prioritize what’s right for the clients over quick profits. That approach will pay off in the long run.

For the third time, organizers Omenaa Mensah and Rafał Brzoska united the most prominent figures from the worlds of business, art, and showbiz around the idea of helping others in the courtyard of King Jan III Sobieski’s Palace in Wilanow, Warsaw, Poland.

A standout moment in the Great Emotions category was the fierce bidding for a unique fashion experience from Dolce & Gabbana. For the first time, the luxury fashion house offered a bespoke gown from their iconic Alta Moda collection, promising an unparalleled sartorial adventure for the winning bidder. A special treat for art collectors and fashion connoisseurs was the auction of a limited edition handbag from the Artycapucines Louis Vuitton × Ewa Juszkiewicz collection, for which the lucky winner paid nearly $100,000. Sports enthusiasts could also find exceptional experiences for themselves, among them an exciting tennis match and a shared lunch in Majorca with Rafael Nadal, the outstanding Spanish tennis player, or a cruise in Dubai on the first electric catamaran offered by Sunreef Yachts. The auction winners paid approximately $205,000 in total for both exciting adventures.

The art auction and the Great Emotions, concluded with a result of 5.5 million USD, which was traditionally doubled for the third consecutive time by the host of the evening, Rafal Brzoska, from his personal assets.

From Inside Out: A Design Process Rooted in Nature

The famous American architect Frank Gehry said: “A lot of people don’t get it, but I design from the inside out so that the finished product looks inevitable somehow. I think it’s important to create spaces that people like to be in, that are humanistic”. Mait Lauri likes Gehry`s idea, because the whole point of designing a house is to make it for the humans inside. With Milena house, they had a unique chance to make the house from inside-out.

One thing that has always been the company’s goal, is to not create same thing in all projects. When client hire them, they must know that their interior will be unique, not copy-paste from earlier projects. So, each project is unique, because each client is unique. For example – the fireplace in Milena, it was a masterpiece. Did Da Vinci paint Mona Lisa several times? No, and neither does Ako In. For the next project, they’ll design something different; something that is inspired by a particular place, room, or client. They generate new ideas in each project, and this expands their skills to face new challenges.
